Do you enjoy writing, researching, and editing? Do you want to become a journalist or writer someday? If so, Journalism class is the right class for you. Journalism is offered to all grade levels during the first semester of the school year. This class introduces and encourages students to become journalists and writers as students write for The Knight Times, meet professional journalists, and also learn about the skills and ethics behind journalism.
This elective is run by ICCP’s Ms. Bettina Recchia. Ms. Recchia is also an English I and English II Honors teacher. She is deeply involved with the school paper and encourages others to join. Students can join Newspaper Club anytime throughout the school year.
In this class, students learn about America’s history with journalism, a journalist’s responsibilities to society, how to convey news, and how to form and exercise news judgement. Journalism class teaches students how to conduct interviews and surveys, handle quotes, and write leads and headlines.
Some guest speakers this class has had so far are ABC’s Jason Knowles, NBC’s Sarah Lauch, 101.9 The Mix’s Susan Wiencek, Alumna Amanda Tugade, and Photo Journalist Geoff Stellfox. ICCP welcomes Katie Marsico and Dan Bindert as future guests. Ms. Recchia says, “Guest speakers offer wonderful insight on not only what it’s like to be in the field, but what it takes to be in the field”.
ICCP’s journalism class will travel to NBC’s news studio in November.
