An extracurricular activity that many students enjoy at IC Catholic Prep is Math Team. The team meets on Wednesday mornings from 7:05-7:40. The supervisor for the freshmen and sophomores is Mrs. Martin while the supervisor for juniors and seniors is Mrs. Idasek. During the meetings, team members work together to solve critical thinking math problems and prepare for the competitions by learning new concepts and strategies.
Students are grouped based on what math class they take and are usually able to work with a partner with problems they don’t understand. The math team did a practice competition on October 2nd and October 23rd before school to prepare for the competitions in the future. There are three competitions this year. There is the conference competition, regional competition, and state competition. An upcoming event for the math team is volunteering at the junior high math contest on November 2nd.
As a member of the math team, I think this is a great opportunity to strengthen my math skills outside of the classroom. I recently talked to Ava Buscemi, a freshman at IC Catholic Prep. Ava said that the reason why she joined math team was to enhance her math skills in a fun learning environment outside of the classroom, and has enjoyed it so far. Thank you to Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Idasek, and all the math team officers that help make this team possible!
