2020 Winter Sports Wrap Up

Unbelievably the winter sports season has come to an end for the Knights. While it would be easy to jump head first into the spring season, let us reflect on some of our best moments this winter season. Top 5 Moments in the 2019-20 ICCP Winter Season include…

5. Girls’ Basketball Christmas Spirit

The girls’ basketball team kicked off the Christmas Holiday with a tournament championship at the Ram Classic. The team made a strong showing and started off with a 55-29 victory over Thornridge. Junior Alia Johnson led the way with 14 points. Sophomore Claire Wagner nearly recorded a double-double chipping in 8 points with 10 rebounds. The next day brought a 37-29 win over Walter Payton High School. Junior Gia Gaudio led the team with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Alia Johnson and junior Frankie Chaidez grabbed 12 and 8 boards respectively. In the semifinal, the Knights poured it on Bremen for a 20-point win in a 46-26 victory. Alia Johnson led the team with 20 points (10/15 from the field), along with 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Senior Cate Radoha chipped in 7 points and Claire Wagner grabbed 10 rebounds. In the championship against host school Reavis, the Knights were clicking on all cylinders to a 48-32 win. Claire Wagner had 15 points on 70% shooting, nine rebounds and two steals. Alia Johnson had a double-double in 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Hannah Johnson stepped up big with eight points, three assists, and four steals. Gaudio chipped in nine points. Alia Johnson, Gia Gaudio, and Claire Wagner were named to the All-Tournament team.

4. Setting the Record Straight

On February 28, senior Zach Jordan tied a school record with 45 points in a game against Aurora Christian. During his last career game at home, Jordan shot 15/28 from the field, including 7/16 from beyond the arc. He topped it off with 8/9 from the free-throw line. Over half of his points (24pts) came in the 4th quarter. This was the cherry on top to an incredible senior season for Jordan. He went on to be named to the MSC All-Conference Team. Zach averaged 15ppg with a 71% FT, 56% 2PT, 34% 3PT. He logged seven games over 20pts including a 31-point performance as well.

3. Are We Human or Are We Dancer?

Lady Knights Dance their way Back to State! The dance team competed in four invitationals this 2019-20 competitive season. Each one tweaking, adjusting and improving upon the next performance all while battling injuries and key dancers sidelined. They had a Top 5 performance at Wheaton North to start the season and a 4th place finish at Naperville North. They took 2nd in the MSC Conference. The Lady Knights Dance team took 4th in IHSA 1A Sectionals at Dekalb to make their way back down to State. They competed at Grossinger Arena in Bloomington, Illinois.

2. That’s How He Rolls

Jacob Gunther bowls his way to a very impressive freshman campaign. At IHSA Regionals, he bowled an 1105 to advance to the Sectionals. On January 25, in the IHSA Sectional, hosted by ICCP, Jacob opened the first series with a 262. He continued strong and bowled a 1251, putting him third among advancing individuals downstate. He continued to turn heads at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon at IHSA State. He started the first series with a 278, 299, and a 242. He went into Day 2 of the State Final in 4th Place. He battled during the second day against tough competition with a 209 and 245 in his first two games. Jacob went on to take 32nd in State.

1. The Champ is Here

IC Catholic Prep Wrestling sent six individuals downstate to State Farm Center to compete in the IHSA 1A Individual Championships. Freshman Saul Trejo Jr took home the 106 lb State Title in a 5-0 Decision over senior Matthew Minick of Althoff Catholic. Joining Trejo were Freshman Mike DiBenedetto (113lbs), Sophomore Nicholas Renteria (120lbs), Sophomore Brandon Navarro (160lbs), Sophomore Jadon Mims (220lbs), Freshman Isaiah Gonzalez (285lbs). The six combined for a total of 13 wins, the most in ICCP Wrestling history. Nicholas Renteria placed 4th in the 120 weight class.

  • Chauncey Lee scores 30 points on the road vs. St. Francis
  • Zach Jordan hits 3 free-throws with no time remaining to beat Riverside-Brookfield by 1 at home
  • Boys’ Bowling beats Bishop Mac on the Road
  • Girls’ Basketball wins Thriller at Coaches vs. Cancer over St. Francis
  • Jacob Gunther won 3rd place for high series with a 664 and 6th place for a high game of 237 in Knight Invite
  • Trejo Wins IHSA Sectional
  • DiBenedetto Wins IHSA Sectional
  • Dance takes 4th in IHSA Sectional
  • Girls’ Basketball finishes 2nd in MSC Blue Division
  • Dance takes 2nd in MSC Conference
  • Boys Basketball win Coal City Thanksgiving Tournament
  • Coach Todd Fisher wins his 400th career victory
