Although IC Catholic Prep does not have a pool on campus, this year Maren Gibbons, Class of 2023, will be the first and lone representative of the Knights Swim Team at the Illinois High School Association Sectionals competition. The sectional competition is on Saturday, November 16th at York High School.
Pending her performance at Sectionals, Maren could qualify for State competition later this month. She is in her fifth year with the Elmhurst Swim Team and she’s been competing at the club level for three years.
In her first official IHSA swim meet, Maren will debut her swim talents as a high school student-athlete while making school history and trailblazing a new athletic tradition here at IC Catholic Prep.
This is, however, her second official high school sport. She is a multi-sport student-athlete and in addition to swimming, Maren plays for the Knights Football team—three time state defending champion. They went 8-1 during the regular season.
“I’m in awe of Maren’s determination to compete not only in football, but to make waves as the inaugural swimmer at IC Catholic Prep,” said Michael Fahey, athletic director and acting swim coach. “Maren is mature beyond her years. She is determined to succeed in her academic and athletic pursuits and I’m honored to join her as her first high school coach in this swim journey.”
Since the creation and initial posts on the official Twitter account for IC Catholic Prep Swim (@ICCPSwim), even more interest has been generated among underclassmen and it is very probable that an official team will be formed next year.
“We have seen an incredible and positive response from our community about adding swim to our athletic programs,” said Fahey. “I welcome the day when we announce our first-ever swim coach and the formation of our swim team, which will only add value to an already extracurricular rich environment for our students.”
